A sunbather at Cannes.

A game of boules/petanque at Antibes.

A villa for sale in an agent’s window.

The entrance to W. Somerset Maugham’s Villa Mauresque on Cap Ferrat.

The beach at St Tropez when topless bathing was coming into fashion.

Sunset at Cannes.

The beach at Cannes.

Concrete blocks protecting the road from the sea just outside Cannes. Some years ago, I was lying on one of these blocks sunbathing, when a young women (and a complete stranger) climbed down from the road to join me, laid down a towel next to mine, stripped down to nothing more than a bikini bottom, and, without saying a word, lay down beside me.

Sleeping traveller at Nice.

Light fading at Monte Carlo.

The casino at Monte Carlo.

Readers who, like me, are attracted to this part of Europe, might like to take a look at my detective story Dark Harbour, which I set in Cannes, and in which I tried to distil some of the happy memories I have of this part of France.
